Framing Financial Risk: What Does Financial Risk Management Manage?

This research is based on ethnographic fieldwork in finance, with participant observations carried out in the market risk management department of a European bank in long-term liquidation as well as in the life and financial risk department of a large European insurance company. Where one would expect risk management to control and measure risks as taken by the business sides of the organization, this was not seen as such in the research. Rather, the risk managers actually used risk measures and controls to help avoid problems, for either themselves, upper management or the organisation.

During her PhD research, Anne has been a teaching assistant for multiple general sociology courses as well as a gender studies course at Sciences Po. In addition to finance, her research interests include accounting, gender studies and organisation studies. Before joining the MaxPo in 2013, she completed her MSc in Research Sociology at the University of Edinburgh, and she has two Bachelors' degrees from Erasmus University Rotterdam, one in sociology and another in one econometrics and operational research.
